A strong storm is expected this weekend in Rio. The Governor has put Rio de Janeiro under maximum alert.

We had to cancel all the tours booked for this weekend. Tours between the 22nd and 24th of march.

Rio Cruise Ship Season

The cruise ship season in Rio de Janeiro started in October last year and will be over in April 2020.

We are expecting about 425 tourists arriving in Rio during this period. An increase of 12% when we compare with last season’s numbers. It will also be the season with the most arrivals of cruise ships in the last 20 years. Among the 37 ships, 27 are international and 10 national ships.

Why is this happening?

Because Rio is the best evaluated city in South America among the tourists who came to this part of the world.

Elections in Brazil and in Rio de Janeiro

Elections in Brazil will be over next Sunday, 28th October.

Former army captain Jair Bolsonaro and Workers’ Party candidate Fernando Haddad advanced from the first round vote and will face off in the October 28th runoff.

Bolsonaro is well ahead on the polls and should win the elections to become Brazil’s next president. People are tired of the old politics and are choosing new faces to lead them.

Elections in Rio de Janeiro

Rio will also have 2 candidates fighting each other to become the next governor: Eduardo Paes and Wilson Witzel. The second one is leading the polls and should win.

One of the biggest problems in Bazil (and in Rio) is security for its people. Violence is growing in many areas and this is the main reason why these 2 candidates will most probably win the elections. Both have clear programs to combat violence head on in the favelas and in the poorest areas in the country. Let’s wait and see what happens…

Sugarloaf, a place to go!

It is the second most visit attraction not only in Rio de Janeiro, but in Brazil. People take the cable cars to go up to the Urca Mountain and then to the Sugarloaf itself. But they have no idea…

Yes, people have no idea how deep the Ganabara Bay is at certain points. 300 meters is the depth where the Sugarloaf is located! Have a look at the picture below:

During our tour in Rio, the Sugarloaf is an important part of our itinerary. We take lot’s of people all the way to the top, but it’s a shame that we can’t show or at least give them an idea of what this picture shows.

Royal Portuguese Reading Cabinet in Rio

A great place to visit in Rio de Janeiro is the Royal Portuguese Reading Cabinet.

Was passing by the main streets in Rio downtown on my way to take the ferries to Niterói. Could not miss this fantastic building, full of history and books! A place to admire, to study, to research, etc…

Unfortunately the Royal Cabinet has been closed for over a year now. And it will be like that for the next couple of months. A major upgrade at the roof and paintings throughout the entire place are happening at the moment.

Would like to know a bit more about the Royal Portuguese Reading Cabinet?

It was a project of the Portuguese architect Rafael da Silva e Castro. Erected between the pattern of exuberant Gothic-Renaissance effect at the time of the Portuguese Discoveries.

Opened in 1880 on the centenary of the death of Camões, the presence of D. Peter, it houses the largest number of works by Portuguese outside Portugal. About 400 thousand titles of Portuguese Literature.

The facade, inspired by the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon, was crafted by Joseph Germano Salle in limestone rock in Lisbon and brought by ship to Rio de Janeiro.

Open to the public since 1900, the library of the Royal Cabinet, daily, receives, on average, one hundred and fifty visitors.

Military in charge of security in Rio de Janeiro

Army takes over Rio de Janeiro

Brazilian president Temer along with his ministers have decided that the army is taking over security in Rio de Janeiro. The violent situation that the state of Rio has been going through over the past couple of years is no longer acceptable.

The army will take over command of police forces in a bit to curb violence driven by drug gangs in the favelas (slums).

Emergency Procedure

It is indeed an extreme procedure that Brasilia (Brazil’s capital) is taken. It is the first time that such measure is in place since the last democratic constitution in 1988.

The congress has to vote this presidencial decree at once. That’s because the country is put to a hold till this presidential act is aproved. Congressman have already decided the the vote will take place in Brasilia tomorrow.

Let’s hope that the violence starts decreasing in a short future.

museum of tomorrow in rio de janeiro

A great museum in Rio de Janeiro!

It’s been one year since the opening of the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro.

We can say that there was caos installed in Rio de Janeiro for almost 3 years during the construction of the Museum of Tomorrow at Mauá Square, near downtown Rio. Actually the entire square has been revitalized. Before it has a dark and dangerous place. Today we have a place where people can get together, where tourists can enjoy not only the Museum of Tomorrow but also the MAR. In Portuguese, MAR stands for Museu de Arte do Rio, or Rio Art Museum. It is located just beside the Museum of Tomorrow.

The Museum of Tomorrow had its opening day on the 17th December 2015. Since then 1.4 million people had visited the museum. It became the most visited museum in Brazil!

The number is quite impressive. It is more than the visitors that the MIS SP, MASP and MAR have received combined!

Aquario in Rio de Janeiro

Visit the Aquario in Rio de Janeiro!

Are you in Rio de Janeiro for just a few days? Try to put in your list the Aquario! It is Rio’s latest big attraction. Located in Praça Mauá, the aquarium offers several attractions to adults and children. Different tanks holding from the tiny little fish to the huge hammerhead shark are available for the visitors to enjoy.

I have visited the aquarium last weekend and one of the things I like the most was the fact that there were people teaching us a bit more about the marine life. They were very helpful indeed!

People also had the opportunity to take pictures in a not so common angles as you see below…

And of course we can’t forget the biggest star of the aquarium: This big shark drove people crazy as it was swimming in circles passing by the crowd!

The Aquario in Rio de Janeiro is open from 10am to 6pm. But you have to get in no later than 5pm.

Prices vary from R$40 to R$80.

Great day at the Sugarloaf in Rio

Went to Barra da Tijuca to pick up 2 people from Greece and start an other private tour in Rio de Janeiro.

Elias and Nico. 2 good friends who were in Rio just for 1 day. Then they were heading to Maceió, Northeast of Brazil.

It was not a sunny day. Cloudy but not raining.

Our first stop was at the Sugarloaf and that’s is the reason for this post: not very often we see these visitors. Even thought I’ve been there many times, yesterday was special. We had some unique visitors!

The Marmosets you can see at the pictures come really close to you. Of course they come looking for food.

Have you noticed the mother caring its baby (picture above)?

You can see Nico having a great time with the Marmoset!

As you can see behind us, it was a cloudy day. But that didn’t stop us having a great time at the Sugarloaf!

Olympics in Rio de Janeiro

Olympics starts tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro

After 8 years of preparation Rio de Janeiro is ready for the Olympics. I have visited all the venues during the past week and I can say that they are all ready for the begining of the games.

Below there are 2 pictures showing the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas venue.

Most of the games will be held at the Barra Arena in Rio de Janeiro as you can see below. And the Carioca Arena is the biggest one.

50.000 volunteers will be helping during the games. 20% of them come from oversears – from 150 different countries.

Let’s hope that the olympics in Rio de Janeiro turns out to be a great success!
