It was a great Carnival for the tourism industry indeed. We have received almost 1 million tourists in the Wonderful City, how Rio de Janeiro is called. The exact number provided by the secretary of tourism was 977 thousands tourist. It has generated a income of US$ 782 million to Rio. There were also 10 cruise ship during the 4-day Carnival in Rio.

Blocos in Rio de Janeiro Carnival

You see above two of the several ‘blocos’ that we have in Rio de Janeiro during Carnival. It is infact estimated that there are about 450 blocos in the city! Don´t know what ‘bloco’ is? Well, they start small, usually with a group of friends getting together to celebrate Carnival. Then more and more people join the group. The final result is a crowd of thousands of people in a parade the can last for a few hours!

We had the second and last day of the Rio Carnival parade yesterday. It was again a great show that the samba schools organized.

The O Globo journal is an extra official way of voting and it has selected Imperatriz Leopoldinense as the best samba school among all. We still have to wait for the official result this coming Wednesday but we can say that Imperatriz will be among the top 5 for sure.

The top 5 schools will be seen again at Sambódromo (this big avenue you see above) next Saturday. It is what we call ´the winners only parade´.

We are set to have a new record in Rio: 1 million tourists are expecting to visit the city during this year´s Carnival! In 2014 we had 918 thousand people.

Since yesterday 50 thousand people passed by Pier Mauá, where the cruise ship are located. They come from Argentina, Japan, United States and from a few countries in Europe.

Carnival on the streets is also growing and this year we are going to have a total of 456 blocos (informal Carnival on Rio´s streets). Tourists also love this type of Carnival.

Spending per tourist in Rio de Janeiro

Each tourist spends on average US$ 800 per day while in Rio. It includes accommodation, meals and sightseeing. They also stay in Rio for about 7 days. This is indeed a great boost for the local economy.

It was a pity for many of the participants during the first day of Carnival in Rio yesterday. We have been waiting for this rain for at least a month and finally we´ve got it. And lot´s of it!

The rain starts during the opening of the Sambas Schools parade at Sambódromo ( a huge avenue where the parade takes place).

Samba Schools

The first Samba School at Sambódromo was Viradouro, which is located in Niterói (city across the bay, separeted from Rio de Janeiro by a 14-kilometer bridge). They did very well. Then it was Mangueira´s turn, the most traditional School in Rio. Its colours are green and pink, and it´s always beautiful to watch Mangueira at the Sambódromo. They also did a great job!

Despite the rain Carnival went well on its first day and participants have managed to put up a great show!
