The cruise ship season in Rio de Janeiro started in October last year and will be over in April 2020.

We are expecting about 425 tourists arriving in Rio during this period. An increase of 12% when we compare with last season’s numbers. It will also be the season with the most arrivals of cruise ships in the last 20 years. Among the 37 ships, 27 are international and 10 national ships.

Why is this happening?

Because Rio is the best evaluated city in South America among the tourists who came to this part of the world.

Tourists in Rio Carnival

1 million tourists in Rio de Janeiro Carnival

We are set to have a new record in Rio: 1 million tourists are expecting to visit the city during this year´s Carnival! In 2014 we had 918 thousand people.

Since yesterday 50 thousand people passed by Pier Mauá, where the cruise ship are located. They come from Argentina, Japan, United States and from a few countries in Europe.

Carnival on the streets is also growing and this year we are going to have a total of 456 blocos (informal Carnival on Rio´s streets). Tourists also love this type of Carnival.

Spending per tourist in Rio de Janeiro

Each tourist spends on average US$ 800 per day while in Rio. It includes accommodation, meals and sightseeing. They also stay in Rio for about 7 days. This is indeed a great boost for the local economy.

6 cruise ships in Rio today!

Rio has just received 6 cruise ships and many more are coming! 20.000 people disembarked at Praça Mauá in Rio de Janeiro today. It was a very well organized task where the tourists knew beforehand how much they would pay to go to the main destinations in Rio. 350 taxis and 120 buses where waiting for the tourists and charging R$ 13 per person to go to Copacabana, for example.

From January till April the secretary of tourism in Rio is expecting 100 cruise ship. It will be a busy season indeed!
