I have just arrived from an other day trip from Rio de Janeiro to Petropolis. It was a great day and I had with me 2 ladies from the United States, mother and daughter. As usual, we left Rio about 9:00am to get in Petropolis by 10:30am. It is a nice drive and not too much traffic, specialy if it is a week day.

The Cristal Palace in Petropolis

The Cristal Palace is part of our day tour from Rio, and we visit the square where it is located just after lunch. For my surprise the full Christmas decoration is almost ready!

Now in Petropolis you not only have the beautiful Cristal Palace, but also different attractions at the same place.

On a normal day during the year, we don’t see these tents (below) where the locals get togheter to offer tourists their products.

They are still setting up the entire area, and that’s the reason why you don’t see people in the pictures.

Come and visit Petropolis in December! Santa is about to take off!

Despite the fact that Brazil did not win the Soccer World Cup, the tournament was a huge success for the country. Specially in Rio de Janeiro where the city held the final match! We witnessed a considerable increase in the number of tourists, which was a big boost for the local economy.

The Gloria Hotel used to belong to the once Brazilian billionaire Eike Batista. His empire collapsed last year and since then most of his businesses have been sold or investments have been put on hold. The hotel was under a major refurbishment and the workers simply stopped working mid last year when the crises became well known to everybody in Rio and in Brazil.

The hotel was then sold yesterday to the Swiss group Acron. It is still not clear which tour operator the new owner will put in charge to run the hotel on a daily basis. Maybe they will finalize the original project, which envisioned the construction of more 346 luxury rooms, placing the Gloria Hotel as one of the top ten hotels in the world.
